Superfuzz Bigmuff is the debut EP of Seattle grunge band Mudhoney. It is Mudhoney's first officially release besides singles, and is one of the first albums released by Sub Pop Records. It is one of, if not the, most acclaimed grunge EP in the world. It was later combined with the later EP, Boiled Beef & Rotting Teeth into the compilation Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles.
Background[]
After singing to Sub Pop in 1988, they set to recording Superfuzz Bigmuff and their debut single, known as "Touch Me I'm Sick." The album carries "In 'n' Out of Grace," which carried a sample of the 1966 film, The Wild Angels.
Musical Style[]
Mudhoney's Superfuzz Bigmuff and later released have been a large influence on many grunge bands. Superfuzz Bigmuff combines the hard and fast tempos of garage rock while taking the angst of the newly created grunge and implementing them into the same album, while Mark Arm shouted his tense and angry vocals, occasionally screaming. The album has been described by author Jamie Gonzalo as "sexy, smart, humorous and hard."
Sales and Reception[]
The album sold very poorly on its release. Despite this, it has reached no. 3 on the UK Indie Charts, and it has been hailed as one of the most influential grunge albums of all time. Despite getting mixed to positive reception from multiple magazines, it has gained widespread positive reception from many grunge fans and sites. Along with Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, Superfuzz Bigmuff has appeared on the popular musical reference book, 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die, a book which was organized chronologically. The album was included in Kurt Cobain's top 50 albums.
Mark Deming of Allmusic wrote a review for Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles, praising the dirty and sloppy sounds of the album: "The band's snarky wit, brazenly sloppy guitar work, and songs that combined melodic hooks with Godzilla-sized riffage reinterpreted the visceral kick of metal into a format that celebrated its power while stripping it of its pomposity." Allmusic and Popmatters give the album 9 out of 10.
