Smell the Magic is the second album by the Los Angeles band L7. It was initially released in September 1990 as a 12" EP containing only the first six songs. It was reissued on CD in July 1991, expanded to album length with three more tracks: "Packin' a Rod", "Just Like Me" and "American Society". The opening song, "Shove", was released as the band's first single.

Reception[]

The album has met with more positive reception among critics than its predecessor, the self titled L7. Robert Christgau gave the album a A. He wrote about the band, stating: "these clitocentric trouble girls are everything the Runaways were supposed to be." This was the first L7 album Christgau had reviewed. The album was given 4 stars by Allmusic and the Rolling Stone Album Guide. Eduardo Rivadavia of Allmusic's review staff gave the album 4 stars, praising the bands style. He writes "L7 begins to find the sense of melody to complement its distorted punk guitar assault. The band deserves ultimate praise for writing from a completely female perspective at all times." He also praised the track Fast and Firghtening.
